March 2013

Our visit to Olbrich Park in March was a win-win mix of the tropics for some and a Herb Society presentation on "Container Herbs" for the rest of the group. The color and heat of the conservatory followed by lunch and camaraderie at the "Weary Traveller" afterwards, checked all the boxes on a cold, blustery morning. The rain held off and the group enjoyed another terrific hike led by our birding expert Anne Koeppe, at Swamplovers. The camaraderie is in the doing.

Steve Richter will co-lead the 10:15 am hike. Meet at the Spring Green Library by 10:00 am for a short talk.  The group interested in hiking at the prairie will then drive out to the preserve, 5 minutes away from the library.  90 minutes max on the hike. It will be a flat hike, shallow grade.  Lunch and browse afterwards at Arcadia Books, 102 E Jefferson St, Spring Green. 608 588 7638

June 26, 2013

Our tour of a private Town of Middleton garden was inspirational. We were dazzled, and suitably humbled by our tour of a fine example of urban agriculture and sustainable living at its best and most creative. We were treated after to figs, and home-grown honey, mead and cider in the shade of the pergola. Sigh . . .

Following an overview of the formation of the Driftless area and an introduction to trout life in the Black Earth Creek, Todd Opsal, from "On the Creek" took us to 3 different bridges along the creek and more insight into the wonders of trout, their habitat, and where and how to catch them. And especially why the creek is the perfect place to spend a few hours, either at dawn or sunset, regardless of what ends up on the line. We're already looking forward to Part 2 next year, which will include boots in the water and fly fishing lessons.

August, 2013

We have nothing specific planned. Take a break from the vegetable garden and take a hike.

September 14, 2013

Finale potluck at Indian Lake: The wind died down, the sunset could be seen through the trees, and the moon rose. A little hazy, but very round. Tasty food, a roaring campfire-most ably stoked by Paul Pienkowski-and the cheery, companionable company of friends made for a wonderful evening. And all in our Berry backyard. Definitely one to repeat.

We shall gather in February, over potluck brunch, to plan out our 2014 activities. Impromptu snow-shoeing/X-country skiing always welcome. Thank you to everyone who contributed to making this another great year for the BBC.
